Former National Security Adviser John Bolton was indicted yesterday. Lest one think of these charges in the same vein as the hyper-politicized indictments of James Comey and Letitia James, however, both the prosecutors involved and the charges appear substantive. Here’s what the Washington Post reported:
Unlike those cases, which were pursued by Trump’s handpicked U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia over the objections of career staff members, the indictment against Bolton was signed by Kelly O. Hayes, a respected veteran prosecutor appointed in February to lead the U.S. attorney’s office in Maryland. Tom Sullivan, a career prosecutor who heads the office’s national security division, was among the prosecutors who presented the case to the grand jury and also signed the document.
Is the timing and the enthusiasm of the Department of Justice political? Probably. Is the case itself? Perhaps less so.
And there’s lots more: Trump’s anomalous regime change plans in Venezuela; Tren de Aragua (and sharp disagreements); Trump’s frustrating willingness to give Putin an umpteenth chance; and political party rebels.
