#WTH Gaza isn't the world's only humanitarian disaster
But no one in academia gives a damn about anyone not killed by Jews
Fall semester is starting, and pro-Hamas students and their global enablers are already firing up their antisemitic engines. You’ve read what I and others have written about just who is behind these gross displays, and we’re all tracking the ongoing cravenness of university administrators (with some terrific exceptions).
Setting aside the motivations of university denizens and their terrorist friends, I hope we can all agree that human rights are indeed worth fighting for. And for the small minority among those tens of thousands of students who were demonstrating because they are actually concerned for the well-being of Gazans, good for them. You can care about the fate of the Palestinian people without being an advocate for Hamas. I certainly do.
Today, however, I’d like to talk about humanitarian crises outside of Gaza, about which students and their administrators care little. My examples all involve Islamic victims, merely to underline the appalling hypocrisy of those who fashion themselves defenders of downtrodden Muslims. One of the examples involves new strictures on women in Afghanistan. Every time I hear a Biden administration official or Biden voter tell me about the critical importance of women’s rights and freedoms, every time I see one of those female Code Pink cretins protesting Gaza, I note their silence about women in Afghanistan. Kamala recently told us that Biden’s decision to betray Afghanistan and our troops there was, “courageous and right.” She knows no shame.
For my part, in addition, I have not forgotten the 62,000 Nigerian Christians murdered in Nigeria since 2000. When was the last time you read about that in the MSM? Saw a college protest? Add that to the list, below, of wars and famines and oppression that don’t rate a campus sit-in.
AFGHANISTAN, from the AP: “Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers have issued a ban on women’s voices and bare faces in public under new laws approved by the supreme leader in efforts to combat vice and promote virtue.[…] It says it is mandatory for a woman to veil her body at all times in public and that a face covering is essential to avoid temptation and tempting others. Clothing should not be thin, tight or short.
“Women should veil themselves in front of all male strangers, including Muslims, and in front of all non-Muslims to avoid being corrupted. A woman’s voice is deemed intimate and so should not be heard singing, reciting, or reading aloud in public. It is forbidden for women to look at men they are not related to by blood or marriage and vice versa.”
SUDAN, from The Dispatch: “When we last wrote to you about the Sudan civil war, the country was nearing a humanitarian catastrophe brought on by a man-made famine. Now, deep in the middle of both the rainy and lean seasons, officials and aid groups believe hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, of people will starve in the coming months.
“The United States held peace talks in Geneva that ended on Friday but made little apparent progress towards a ceasefire in the 16-month war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)—a paramilitary group with roots in the Janjaweed militias responsible for genocide in Darfur 20 years ago—that has displaced more than 10 million people and returned the specter of famine to the Northeast African nation.”
BURMA (Myanmar), from The New Humanitarian: “On the seventh anniversary of the mass atrocities that saw 740,000 Rohingya refugees flee western Myanmar to neighbouring Bangladesh, Amnesty International has warned of “disturbingly familiar” patterns of violence. ‘Rohingya men, women and children are being killed, towns are emptying out, and vestiges of Rohingya history and identity are being eroded. Many are once again seeking shelter in refugee camps across the border in Bangladesh, where economic, security and livelihood conditions have deteriorated,’’ per Amnesty.
SYRIA, from The Syrian Network for Human Rights: “SNHR revealed in its latest report, released today, that 65 civilians were killed in Syria in July 2024, including 23 children and three women, as well as six individuals who died due to torture.
“The 24-page report provides a summary of the civilian deaths that occurred in July 2024, shedding light particularly on victims who died due to torture […] The report additionally notes that the evidence collected by SNHR indicates that some of the attacks documented in the report were deliberately directed against civilians and civilian objects. These attacks, along with instances of indiscriminate bombardment, also resulted in the destruction of more vital facilities and other buildings. Moreover, the report notes, there are reasonable grounds to believe that the war crime of attacking civilians has been committed in many cases.”
The list above is a short survey of some of the more egregious cases of ongoing human rights violations. Where is the United Nations? Disapproving, but in no way proportionate to the numbers suffering. Where is academia? Nowhere. Where are Joe and Kamala? Crickets. And what does this tell us? That there is one reason, and one reason alone, that Gaza is on every front page, every day: Israel is in the spotlight because it is a Jewish state; there is no other reason. There’s a word for that.
PS If you want to know what Israel is doing to mitigate hunger and disease in Gaza, LMK. I’ll add it in a note.
You left out Iran and its treatment of women, Venezuela, as well as the Uighurs in China and Tibet. The other element that’s distinguishes Israel/ Gaza is that Israel is a western style democracy. The Gaza protesters are all anti-western and anti-capitalist, which is crazy given the record of authoritarian regimes
Thanks for paying
attention to this!
